~Ever wonder why some set ups work and some don’t?~

As a die hard turkey hunter and seminar speaker for both “Hunters Specialties” and “Northwoods Adventures TV“, I get asked a multitude of questions each season on how to set up on turkeys. Do you use a decoy? Do you roost birds every time? Do you ever “run-and-gun”? How important is specific camouflage design? Well, for me, the most important aspect of the hunt is a good set up so let’s start there.

Here in the Northeast, our turkeys tend to start gobbling in mid-March and strutting activity becomes widespread about the same time. It’s then that I’ll put my scouting tactics into overdrive, even though the season doesn’t open until the very end of April. Why? Because good preparation will always tip the odds in my favor. On Sunday, October 14, 2007 at about 6:30 a.m., I was on the way home from work when my brother called asking if I wanted to go deer hunting. I really didn’t want to go because I was pretty tired. But I told my brother I would go for a short while. So I went home, put on my camos, grabbed my trusty bow, and off we went. We got in the woods, which are located in between Mansfield (Ohio) and Bellville (Ohio), around 8:00 a.m… I climbed up in my tree stand and got settled in. My brother was just east of me, about 100 yards. About 30 minutes later I was dozing off. I leaned over a couple times because I was so tired. Finally the last time, I about fell off my seat. Michigan DNR’s Miracle Christmas! They Found $20 Million

Art Summer at Simply Outdoors sent me an email yesterday asking me if I had been following the story in Michigan about budget shortfalls with the Department of Natural Resources. While Some Towns Struggle With Deer Overpopulation, Others Ban Hunting

From one community to another across the urban landscape of America, residents are struggling to find ways to control deer populations. At some point during a community’s growth cycle, residents began closing their lands down to hunting. In many cases the entire township closed all land within the city limits to hunting.

In most of these closed communities, officials now are struggling to find ways to control deer populations. With little predation and ample feed, deer are flourishing. Read more
